Microwave error codes
What the most common microwave codes and messages mean, and the parts that usually cause them.
GE
What does F1 mean on my GE microwave?
F1 means the thermal sensor reads open, usually because the cavity got too hot. The usual causes are a failed thermal sensor, a cooling fan that isn't running, or the control board.
What does F2 mean on my GE microwave?
F2 means the thermal sensor is shorted. The usual causes are the sensor itself, its wiring, or the control board.
What does F3 mean on my GE microwave?
F3 means the touchpad is shorted: a button reads as stuck. The usual causes are a failed touchpad, moisture behind it, or the control board.
What does F4 or F5 mean on my GE microwave?
F4 means the humidity sensor reads open; F5 means it's shorted. The usual causes are a failed humidity sensor, its wiring, or the control board.
Why does my GE microwave say SENSOR ERROR?
On a sensor cooking program, it means the microwave couldn't detect steam from the food, often because the food was covered tightly or too small. If it shows on every program, the usual causes are a failed humidity sensor or the control board.
Why does my GE microwave say LOCKED?
LOCKED isn't a fault: the Child Lock is on. Press and hold Clear/Off (or the Lock button on some models) for about 3 seconds to unlock.
Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid
What does F5 E3 mean on my Whirlpool microwave?
F5 E3 points to the door latch circuit. The usual causes are a failed door latch switch, a broken door hook, or the wiring to the control board.
What does F1 mean on my Whirlpool microwave?
F1 codes (such as F1 E0) point to the control: the microwave's control board or touchpad isn't working properly. The usual causes are a failed control board, a failed touchpad, or the wiring between them.
Why does my Whirlpool or Maytag microwave say Door?
"Door" (or "Open/Close door") means the microwave doesn't see the door as closed. On some Maytag models it's a two-step door-opening setting. Otherwise, the usual causes are a failed door switch, a broken door hook, or a misaligned door.
